Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health issues globally, with many individuals experiencing chronic symptoms that impact daily life. Traditional therapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), has been effective in treating anxiety; however, access to such services remains limited due to factors like geographical location, cost, and stigma. The advent of online therapy has provided an alternative, offering accessibility and flexibility for patients who may not otherwise seek treatment (Fowler et al., 2023). Online therapy utilizes digital platforms for delivering psychological interventions, such as video conferencing, online chats, and even apps, making it more accessible to diverse populations.
In Lagos State, where the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) provides psychiatric care, the demand for mental health services has grown significantly in recent years. This has led to the exploration of online therapy as a viable option for managing anxiety disorders among patients who may face barriers to in-person therapy. Online therapy has shown promise in various studies, demonstrating its efficacy in reducing anxiety symptoms (Mendelsohn et al., 2024). However, its effectiveness in the context of Nigerian healthcare facilities, especially in treating anxiety disorders, has not been widely studied.
Despite the increasing demand for mental health services, access to traditional face-to-face therapy remains a challenge in Lagos, especially for individuals struggling with anxiety disorders. The rise of online therapy platforms offers a potential solution, but its effectiveness and acceptance in the Nigerian healthcare context remain underexplored. Therefore, it is critical to assess the role and impact of online therapy on the management of anxiety disorders at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
This study will focus on patients receiving online therapy for anxiety disorders at LASUTH. The study’s scope is limited to anxiety disorders and does not encompass other psychiatric conditions. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported anxiety symptoms and the limited sample size from a single hospital setting.
